The City Council adopted Resolution 38669 in 2013 that established a Transportation Commission. The Transportation Commission is a volunteer body that advises the City Council on transportation-related matters such as short-term and long-range transportation planning, compliance with local, regional, and federal transportation regulations, bike, pedestrian, and mass transit-related planning initiatives, and large capital improvement plans.

Vision for Tacoma: To create and sustain a transformative multimodal transportation system that connects people to places and people to people.

About the Commission

The Transportation Commission consists of eleven members. Members shall be residents of the City of Tacoma and are appointed by the Infrastructure, Planning, and Sustainability (IPS) Council Sub-Committee. Five Commissioners are representatives from each Council district. Four Commissioners represent the city at-large. Two members are non-voting members appointed by the City Manager. Each member brings a range of perspectives and expertise that focus on the City’s long-term vision for mobility options through the City. Members reflect the:

  • professional engineering sector
  • construction/private business sector
  • bike and pedestrian/mass transit sector
  • planning/urban growth sector
  • environmental/sustainability sector
  • general community
  • ADA community

Duties and Responsibilities

Each year the Transportation Commission adopts their work plan. The 2025-2026 work plan was presented to IPS in October 2025.

The Transportation Commission serves in an advisory role, helping guide City decision-making on transportation policies, plans, and projects. Commissioners provide informed recommendations and regularly write letters of support related to policies, projects, funding priorities, and grant applications. They stay connected to community needs by attending public meetings, listening to concerns, and sharing insights back with the City. In addition, Commissioners contribute their expertise through participation in task forces and subcommittees focused on key transportation initiatives.
