Police ChiefPatti Jackson
Throughout my career — whether leading Corrections, Patrol Operations, or broader agency efforts across the Tacoma Police Department — I have focused on accountability, integrity, and strengthening the people who serve with selfless dedication every day. After more than 35 years in law enforcement, stepping up to serve as the Chief of the Tacoma Police Department isn’t about chasing a title — it’s about answering the call when leadership is needed most.
As a law enforcement professional, I am committed to promoting the wellness, resilience, and professionalism of our personnel. Why? Because when we invest in our people, we become even stronger in the service we provide to our community. My colleagues and I care about our neighbors across the city of Tacoma and are innovating to better serve them with integrity and respect.
It’s an honor to stand with the dedicated men and women of the Tacoma Police Department as we move forward together — leading with purpose, building trust, and always keeping our focus where it belongs: on those we serve.

About the Tacoma Police Department
Our department is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA), which only two percent of agencies nationwide hold. With this accreditation, the department’s policies, procedures, management, operations, and support services are routinely assessed to ensure the highest standards of contemporary law enforcement are being met.
In March 2023, the Tacoma Police Department introduced CALEA’s public comment portal. The purpose of this portal is for CALEA to receive public comments regarding the Tacoma Police Department’s compliance with CALEA standards, community engagement, delivery of public safety services, and overall candidacy for accredited status. These comments can be in the form of commendations or concerns. CALEA will use these comments to provide information to the department to support continuous improvement, as well as foster the pursuit of professional excellence.

Electric dirt bikes, mopeds, and motorcycles are increasingly being advertised to youth & their families – but the combination of young, inexperienced riders and devices capable of high speeds on neighborhood streets can have dire consequences.
What families ...need to know:
Know What You’re Buying: Many of these devices are advertised as being suitable for young teens, but are either not street legal at all or are electric motorcycles and require users to be 16+ and have a license, endorsement, registration, and wear a helmet. Look for speed & wattage limits before you buy.
Rules of the Road: Ensure young people understand and are prepared to follow the rules of the road every time – including where they are allowed to ride, requirements for stopping for pedestrians, how to navigate uncontrolled intersections, and appropriate speeds.
Safety First: Always require helmets and safety gear. Ensure you’re following best practices for charging & care of batteries & devices.
Check out the wtsc.wa.gov/erideguide/ for the E-Ride Guide from the Washington Traffic Safety Commission to learn more about different types of e-mobility devices and what rules apply.
Let's keep every ride a safe one. Join us as we work together for safer streets!

🚲💙 BIKE TO SCHOOL DAY WITH SHERMAN ELEMENTARY 💙🚲
Yesterday morning, members of the Tacoma Police Department Bicycle Response Team had the opportunity to join students from Sherman Elementary as they rode their bikes to school for Sherman Elementary’s Bike to School event.
...
Officers joined students, families, and staff for a ride through the neighborhood while promoting bike safety, healthy activity, and community connection along the way.
There may have been a few debates about who had the faster bikes… but we’ll let the kids take that win today. 🚴♂️😄
Thank you to @tacomaschools , Sherman Elementary, and all the families who participated in making the morning such a fun and positive event. Opportunities like this are a great reminder that some of the best conversations happen while simply riding side-by-side.
