Interim Neighborhood and Community Services Director

Katie Johnston

Katie Johnston was appointed to serve as the Interim Neighborhood and Community Services (NCS) Director in January 2025. Prior to this role, Katie served as the Budget Officer in the Office of Management and Budget and has worked at the City of Tacoma since 2011. At the city, she’s also worked on a variety of projects outside of the budget including an executive loan assignment with the Police Department, leading Continuous Improvement, working on projects directly with NCS (contracting process and the stability site), and developing and leading the city’s performance management work.

Before the City of Tacoma, Katie worked in Emergency Response (American Red Cross mass sheltering and client case work), conducted research through UW for the Gates Foundation, and work at both the Port of Seattle and Skagit County.

She brings a strong financial and data analysis background to this role which will be essential to helping Neighborhood and Community Services continue refining its data-driven approach to human service delivery.

Katie is from San Antonio, Texas, and moved to the region in 2007. She loves the outdoors and nature and enjoys walking and biking.

Bachelors of Arts in Business Administration, Trinity University

 

Human Services Commission

NCS helps support the work of the Human Services Commission (HSC). The HSC reviews applications and makes funding recommendations for various contracted human services programs.  The HSC also conducts public hearings, accepts and reviews proposals, selects projects, and makes recommendations to the City Council, as well as advising Council Members and City staff on the development and implementation of Neighborhood and Community Services Strategic Plans.
