Since this week kicked off the Year of the Fire Horse, we thought we'd look back at our own fire horses for #ThrowbackThursday.
Did you know that TFD retired its last horses in 1919, and they worked at old Station 9 (now E9 Firehouse & Gastropub)? Nip, Dick, and Joe were our last... working horses to pull a pumper. TFD occupied the station at 611 North Pine Street until 1965.

If you’re working on your Ready in a Year plan with us, February is the time we create an Action Plan.
🤔 Think about the hazards or disasters that could impact Tacoma (Earthquakes, severe weather, fires, etc)
🚨 Are you signed up for Emergency Alerts so you are notified ...quickly? (tacoma.gov/emergencymanagement)
🗺️ Develop, discuss, and practice an emergency action plan with everyone in your home. Include details for handling pets and household members who may need extra assistance or mobility support.

For #throwbackthursday, we look back to April 1961.
According to an April 17, 1961 article in The News Tribune, this photo is from a practice burn in April 1961. The home was scheduled for demolition, so TFD and 14 other fire departments around Pierce and King counties were allowed to set... a total of 11 small fires in order to practice fighting fires in a controlled, but realistic scenario.
At the conclusion of this one day, multi-agency practice burn, the building was allowed to safely burn down.
We're guessing that one of you can help us identify the location of this practice burn!
