Starting today, Tacoma residents are invited to turn their recycled glass into locally made art through “This Is What We Make of It” — a six-month pilot program offered by the City of Tacoma and Hilltop Artists.
Clear bottles and float glass (e.g. unframed windows and glass shelving) can be dropped off at the Tacoma Recycle Center (3510 S. Mullen St.) for processing into cullet. Hilltop Artists staff and students would then use the cullet to create glass art glass as part of their glass education and production programs for youth.
This pilot program explores the viability of a closed-loop system that would allow for local production of specialty glass, connecting Tacoma’s recycling efforts with youth education, environmental stewardship, and the local creative economy.
The pilot program will run through the end of February 2027.
Glass art produced from this pilot program will go toward the creation of AMOCAT Arts Awards, locally hidden glass treasures, and other Hilltop Artists projects.
