As the Tacoma community continues to grow and evolve, the Tacoma Fire Department (TFD) must adapt its operations to meet increasing demands. To address this need, the city is working to build a new South Tacoma Fire Station.
The current Fire Station #7, built in 1959, is co-located with the South Tacoma Library Branch at 5448 South Warner Street. It houses a single-engine company that responds to over 3,500 emergencies annually—well above both the department’s target and the national standard of 2,500 calls per year. While there is a clear need to add another response unit in this area, the existing station is too small, and the property cannot support the expansion required to accommodate additional emergency vehicles, equipment, and personnel.
As recommended in the 2024 Fire Facilities Master Plan, the city plans to relocate the existing station and construct a new facility. In October 2024, the City Council approved the purchase of vacant land at 5801 South Tyler Street from Parks Tacoma. This new site will enhance TFD’s ability to serve the growing South Tacoma community. It will co-locate critical emergency resources on the South End Recreation & Adventure (SERA) campus—a designated disaster and crisis response site.
During the 2025 State Legislative Session, the new South Tacoma Fire Station was identified as a top capital funding priority. The project received funding in the 2025–2027 State Capital Budget to advance design work and produce construction documents, making the project shovel-ready. Through a competitive selection process, Ferguson Architecture of Tacoma, WA, was chosen to provide architectural and engineering design services.
