Project Overview

Originally part of a 110-year-old trail system that crossed Tacoma and extended to Mt. Rainier, remnants of the historic 1896 Water Ditch Trail “spine” are still used today. An ongoing phased project began in 2008 to restore the trail, and the first two phases are complete. As more funding becomes available, the remaining project phases will restore the entire six-and-a-half-mile trail.

Phase 3 and 4 of the trail projects extends along South Tacoma Way between South M Street and South Pine Street. Improvements will include ADA compliant curb ramps, new storm drains, pedestrian crossing markers, traffic signal upgrades including enhanced pedestrian safety, and trail user amenities including pedestrian level lighting, signs, and Pierce Transit bus stop pads.
