Background

I’m Olgy Diaz, at-large City Council Member. I live in South Tacoma with my two dogs, Pepita and Pancho. Born and raised in Pierce County, my values are shaped by my parents, Guatemalan immigrants who instilled in me the importance of hard work, humor, and family. Following in their footsteps, I became the first in my family to graduate from college, earning dual degrees in Latin American Studies and Women’s Studies from the University of Washington. My dedication to fostering a more inclusive democracy led me to work with organizations like OneAmerica and Planned Parenthood, the Washington State Legislature, and various political campaigns. Currently, I serve as the Deputy Director of Equity, Environmental Justice, and Civil Rights for the Department of Natural Resources.

Appointed in 2022 and elected to a full term in 2023, I represent all of Tacoma as an at-large council member, making history as the first Latina and first out female LGBTQ person to serve in this role. My leadership extends to various roles within the city, including Pierce Transit Commissioner, Pierce County Regional Council Member, and Vice Chair for both the Infrastructure, Planning and Sustainability Committee and the Economic Development Committee. A passionate advocate for nature and public spaces, I prioritize increasing Tacoma’s urban tree canopy, promoting pet adoption, and creating safe, welcoming environments for all. My vision for Tacoma centers on community safety, economic development, and expanding affordable housing options.

I am a strong advocate for Tacoma’s diverse communities. In my free time, I mentor future civic leaders and support local small businesses. As a Tacoma Fire Buff, I support Tacoma’s firefighters after they take care of those in crisis. If you want to talk to me about an issue facing you, reach my office any time via email or phone at (253) 591-5100.
