The Tacoma City Council has adopted the Six-Year Comprehensive Transportation Improvement Program Amended 2026 and 2027-2032. This comprehensive program supports a multimodal system that safely and efficiently connects people to places across the city.

Developed in alignment with the Transportation and Mobility Plan (TMP) adopted in June 2025, the program reflects the City’s commitment to prioritizing safe, connected access for users of all modes, ages, and abilities. The plan places a strong emphasis on active transportation and transit access, seeking to provide mobility options that encourage healthy living, protect the environment, and carry the people and goods that foster Tacoma’s culture and competitiveness.

The program was shaped by extensive citywide community outreach, which included public hearings and attendance at neighborhood events. Grounded in a culture of access, opportunity, and belonging, it deliberately targets improvements to increase safe and connected access to community facilities, services, infrastructure, and employment for residents of diverse income levels and racial or ethnic backgrounds. A key livability goal is to decrease the percentage of individuals spending more than 45% of their income on combined housing and transportation costs.

Adoption of the program satisfies the requirements of Section 35.77.010 of the Revised Code of Washington, which mandates that the legislative body of each city adopt a comprehensive transportation program for the ensuing six years. The document specifically outlines how the City intends to expend revenues for non-motorized transportation purposes. Timely adoption of the program has also ensured that the City remains eligible for vital state and federal grant funding.
