In consultation with the Pierce County Fire Marshal and local fire chiefs, Tacoma has been elevated to a Stage 2 burn ban, effective Monday, August 17, 2026.

Worsening dry conditions, ongoing drought, and increased wildfire risk across the region prompted the change.

Under the ban, recreational fires and portable fire devices with open flames are currently prohibited. Propane and natural gas barbecues can be used even when there is a burn ban, but not barbecues that use charcoal, wood, or any other solid fuel.

Violating a Burn Ban Order or burning illegal fuel can result in a citation from the Tacoma Fire Department and Puget Sound Clean Air Agency. All illegal or unattended fires must be extinguished immediately.

To report an illegal fire under the Stage 2 Burn Ban, call 9-1-1. For more information on the Tacoma Fire Department’s Burn Ban polices, visit the Burn Ban Information page. For more information about air quality burn bans, visit the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency website or call (800) 552-3565.
