On August 12, 2025, the City Council will conduct a public hearing on proposed amendments to the South Tacoma Groundwater Protection District (STGPD) code and Tacoma Municipal Code (TMC) Title 13. The hearing will be held during the Council meeting and will begin upon completion of the regular agenda items, no earlier than 5:15 p.m. Council meetings are conducted in a hybrid format with in-person and virtual options to attend.
The STGPD is a zoning overlay created to protect the South Tacoma aquifer, a vital source of drinking water. The district regulates high-impact uses, hazardous materials, and stormwater infiltration within its boundaries. The City is currently reviewing proposed updates to the code governing this district, as required by the State Growth Management Act and guided by Council direction. The updates aim to strengthen protections for the South Tacoma aquifer. The Council is now seeking public input on the proposed amendments recommended by the Planning Commission.
Details on how to participate in the hearing and submit comments on the proposal are available at tacoma.gov/stgpd. Written comments must be sent to cityclerk@tacoma.gov or 733 Market Street, Room 11, Tacoma, WA 98402 by 5 p.m. on August 11, 2025.
Community members seeking additional details and background materials on the proposed code amendments to the STGPD and TMC Title 13 – including the Planning Commission’s letter of recommendation and Findings of Fact – can visit tacoma.gov/stgpd or contact Senior Planner Maryam Moeinian at mmoeinian@tacoma.gov or (253) 532-1446.
