Pierce Transit and the City of Tacoma intend to enter a formal partnership to support a coordinated and effective safety presence throughout Tacoma.
“Smart partnerships like these make our community safer and stronger,” said Tacoma Mayor Anders Ibsen. “We are grateful for our officers in the Tacoma Police Department and our friends at Pierce Transit for their commitment to the public.”
The Tacoma Police Department and Pierce Transit’s Public Safety team have been in discussions this year to determine the best way to coordinate efforts so law enforcement and behavioral health professionals can respond quickly and effectively to needs in the community.
“We look forward to the City of Tacoma joining Pierce County, and the cities of Lakewood, Puyallup and Federal Way in being a partner in making safety the #1 priority on and around our transit system,” said Pierce Transit Chief Executive Officer Mike Griffus.
“I appreciate that Pierce Transit continues to look for opportunities to coordinate their resources and keep our whole community safer,” said Tacoma Police Chief Patti Jackson. “I am excited our teams were able to come up with an approach that builds on our work together.”
Pierce Transit and the City of Tacoma remain committed to community safety and anticipate presenting the proposal to the Pierce Transit Board of Commissioners and the Tacoma City Council for consideration and approval in November.
