Anders Ibsen was sworn in tonight as Mayor of the City of Tacoma, in a ceremony formally marking his new term. Mayor Ibsen will focus on delivering measurable results, strengthening core City services, and improving day-to-day conditions for Tacoma residents.

Mayor Ibsen’s priorities in 2026 include delivering a safer, more coordinated public safety system, accelerating housing production and affordability at every level, advancing a regional results-driven response to homelessness, growing a resilient economy while investing in critical infrastructure, and building a high-performing, accountable City organization.

“I’m grateful for the confidence Tacoma residents have placed in me,” said Mayor Ibsen. “This role comes with a clear mandate to focus on outcomes, make smart decisions, and ensure the City is delivering the services people rely on every day.“

Mayor Ibsen emphasized collaboration with his Council colleagues, City staff, and regional partners as essential to making progress across key priority areas.

“The work ahead is challenging, but it is achievable,” said Mayor Ibsen. “If we stay focused, data-driven, and willing to work with one another, we can make meaningful progress that residents and businesses can see and feel.”

Elected to public office at 22, Mayor Ibsen served on the Pierce Conservation District Board of Supervisors before serving two terms on the Tacoma City Council representing District 1 from 2012-2019. During his time on the City Council, he helped secure public safety funding and improve budget transparency. He also helped advance key policies including paid sick and safe leave, public broadband expansion, electric vehicle incentives, and the Tacoma Anchor Network for local economic development.
