The Tacoma City Council adopted Resolution 41869 tonight to elevate its 28-year Sister City relationship with George, South Africa to a district-wide partnership with the Garden Route District Municipality, which includes the city of George. This resolution, which concurrently removes the city of George’s Sister City designation, was sponsored by Mayor Anders Ibsen, Council Member Jamika Scott, and Council Member Latasha Palmer.
The Garden Route District Municipality coordinates seven local municipalities, including the city of George, and represents more than 630,000 residents along the southern coast of South Africa. The district’s community needs, cultural assets, and economic strengths align closely with the diversity found in Tacoma and Pierce County.
Future exchanges in this expanded relationship will focus on Port City and maritime trade, tourism, golf and sports diplomacy, jazz, arts and culture, and youth education and development.
More information will be posted soon at tacoma.gov/sistercities.
