A Statement from Tacoma City Council Member Walker on the Community Impacts of the Federal Government Shutdown

“I am deeply concerned that the prolonged shutdown of our federal government is compounding hardships in our community. From the impending loss of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits to the missing paychecks so many of our federal workers rely on, our community members are being hit hard by stalled progress in Washington D.C. With no end in sight, we will be working with our state and federal partners to do what we are able in order to assist and support our community members as the federal government’s failed negotiations continue to impact local communities.

In Tacoma, we are already working hard to step in where we can.

  • As a member of the Pierce Transit Board, I am proud to share that Pierce Transit is allowing all federal employees who present their government-issued ID to ride free during the federal government shutdown. This temporary fare waiver applies to all Pierce Transit services, including Bus, SHUTTLE paratransit, Runner, and Rideshare.
  • Tacoma Public Utilities and the Environmental Services Department offer a Bill Credit Assistance Plan and a Discount Rate Program to support those facing financial challenges. More information on how to enroll in these programs is available here.
  • The Neighborhood and Community Services Department is seeking to increase food access and essentials for local emergency food programs that support efforts to ensure that all area residents, regardless of economic status, have access to reliable and nutritious food. More information for community members seeking a nearby food pantry is available here.
  • An emergency food drive, hosted by Eloise’s Cooking Pot, is taking place on October 29, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Tacoma Dome in Parking Lot A.

At the state level, the Governor’s office is also recognizing the harms facing our community and is providing new financial support for local food banks.

These steps will not eliminate the needs, and more is needed as we find ways to work together to support our community during this time. I want to thank all the local businesses and community members who have already taken action to support each other. I urge all our residents to continue getting involved and support our community when possible through volunteerism, donations, and food contributions. Tacoma has always thrived when we join together, and there are countless impactful organizations that need assistance right now to ensure those in need do not fall through the cracks during this moment of crisis.”
