Apply for a License

The City of Tacoma offers licensing services for businesses and animals.

Business Licenses

The Tax & License division acts with Integrity, Service, Excellence, and Equity in administering Tacoma’s tax, license, and employment standards regulations – providing for a fair, equitable, and safe business and working environment while delivering high-quality customer service.

Nearly all businesses that operate in the State of Washington will need to be licensed at both the state and local levels; in addition, a specialty or professional license may be needed. The Washington State business license is not a “blanket” license that eliminates the need for a local license.

You may operate your business under any one of several business structures. Each type of business structure has certain advantages and disadvantages that should be considered. You should contact an attorney, accountant, financial advisor, or other business or legal advisor to determine which structure is most suitable for your business.

File Local allows you to easily apply online. User fees apply. Allow three to five business days to process your application.

Existing Businesses or Not Ready to Apply?

Mail – complete the City of Tacoma Business License Application or if your business activity is only rental of real property, complete the Application for Business License – Rental. Please allow up to 15 business days from the date you mailed the application to receive your license.

In Person – complete the City of Tacoma Business License Application.  Or if your business activity is only rental of real property, complete the Application for Business License – Rental. Please allow up to one hour to process your application. Applications received after 4 p.m. will be accepted but may not be processed the same day.

The Tax & License office is located at 747 Market Street, Room 212, Tacoma, WA 98402. Parking is metered. Payment is due at time of application; cash, check or credit cards are accepted.

Animal Licenses

If you live in the City of Tacoma or Fircrest, you are required by law to license dogs and cats over the age of eight weeks. New residents are required to obtain a pet license within 30 days of moving into the city. Licenses are valid for one year and requires annual renewal.
