The Safe Place program is a partnership between local businesses, community members, and the Tacoma Police Department (TPD). Safe Place represents TPD’s commitment to fight all hate in our community.

A Message from Chief Patti Jackson

Tacoma Police Chief Patti JacksonService to our community is a core value of the Tacoma Police Department, meaning that we work alongside you to create a safe and secure environment in which to live, work, visit, and thrive. Hate and the crime it can lead to have no place in our city. My colleagues and I commit to respond to, investigate, and address all hate crimes accordingly. We must safeguard the diversity central to Tacoma.”

— Chief Patti Jackson, Tacoma Police Department

Our Community Policing LGBTQIA+ officers serve as liaisons to TPD leadership, including the Chief of Police, to guide the agency’s engagement with and service to Tacoma’s LGBTQIA+ community.

Our Commitment

Safe Place logo

TPD commits to addressing all hate crimes, including crimes committed because of race, color, religion, ancestry, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender expression or identity, disability, homelessness, marital status, political ideology, age, or parental status.

Help Stop Hate Crimes

As a business, school, or community organization you can help stop hate crimes and bullying by:

  • Calling 9-1-1 immediately if a victim of any crime enters your premises.
  • Allowing the victim to remain on your premise until police arrive.
  • Calling 9-1-1 again and providing a physical description of the victim and/or suspect(s), direction of travel, and any injuries that you may have observed if the victim leaves prior to police arrival.

The Safe Place program is zero cost to your business, school, or community organization. As with any emergency, your staff should use care and caution when providing the victims of crime shelter, while also being mindful of the safety of your patrons and co-workers, and complying with your existing policies. There is no extra liability to your business or organization, as we are not asking you to do anything you would not already do.

How to Get Involved

If you’d like to get involved, please fill out the form below. As a participant in the initiative, we will give you a free Safe Place window decal you can put on display to show that you are committed to fighting hate in our community. Once your form has been completed, your application will be sent to TPD’s Safe Place Coordinator, who will then mail you your decal. Place your decal in the main public entrance of your building, easily visible to anyone walking past.
