The Parking Technical Advisory Group (PTAG) helps shape Tacoma’s parking system by advising on curb management, enforcement, and access strategies with a focus on community impact and equitable access across the city.

The PTAG provides ongoing recommendations to the City Manager on parking and curb management policies, using data, system performance insights, and community input to help ensure Tacoma’s parking system aligns with adopted guiding principles and citywide mobility goals.

Formally established by City Council through Ordinance 27840 in 2010, PTAG evolved into a standing advisory body that now supports citywide parking strategy, system performance and curb management initiatives.

Notable Accomplishments

System Foundations:
  • Supported the rollout of Tacoma’s Meter District (2010), establishing a managed parking system in the downtown core.
  • Helped shape and expand the Residential Parking Program to better manage neighborhood parking demand.
  • Guided the development of an integrated parking system approach, aligning on-street and off-street strategies.
  • Established the guiding principles that continue to inform how Tacoma Manages its parking system today.
Ongoing Governance Tools
  • Established the Parking System Annual Report to track performance, improve transparency, and support data-informed decisions.
  • Approved a decision-making framework for rate setting to support consistent, data-informed pricing.

Membership

The PTAG consists of up to 12 volunteer members appointed by the City Manager, each serving a two-year term. Members represent a range of perspectives, including residents, business and property owners, major parking generators, and everyday parkers, ensuring the group reflects how Tacoma’s parking system is experienced across the city.

Staff Support

PTAG is supported by staff from the Transportation Division of the Public Works Department. Staff provide technical expertise, prepare meeting materials, coordinate public meetings and serve as a resource to PTAG members. While staff facilitate the group’s work, recommendations are developed by PTAG members and forwarded to the City Manager for consideration.

One of PTAG’s primary responsibilities is to evaluate parking and curb management issues and provide recommendations to the City Manager. Recommendations are developed through public meetings, review of data and supporting information, and discussion amongst PTAG members and city staff. These recommendations help inform future parking programs, policies, and strategic initiatives.
