Tacoma City Council Expresses Opposition to Initiative Measure No. IL26-001 and Initiative Measure No. IL26-638

Tuesday July 28, 2026

The Tacoma City Council unanimously voted to adopt Resolution 41972, expressing their opposition of two initiatives on the November 3, 2026, General Election Ballot: Initiative Measure No. IL26-001, which concerns parental rights related to children in public schools, and Initiative Measure No. IL26-638, which concerns participation in athletics in K-12 schools.

IL26-001 repeals amendments to a statute listing certain rights of parents and guardians of public-school children and re-enacts the law as it was originally enacted by Initiative No. 2081, passed by the Washington state Legislature in 2024.

IL26-638 changes the law to require medical sex certification as part of sports physicals for all girls and bans parents from using birth certificates instead.
