As part of its ongoing support for the local small business community, the City of Tacoma’s Community and Economic Development Department is hosting a Profit and Loss (P&L) Show & Tell workshop for small business owners on April 21. Taking place from 2 – 4 p.m. at the Tacoma Public Library (1102 Tacoma Ave. S), this in-person event is designed to help local small business owners better understand the daily financial workings of their operations.

The upcoming workshop will be led by Katherine Raz, founder and owner of The Fernseed, a local shop. Since opening her business in 2019, Raz has become a thoughtful and experienced local voice on the realities of small business ownership, capital access, and navigating commercial corridors. During the event, she will offer a candid look at the numbers behind running a storefront, guiding event attendees through revenue, expenses, margins, and the vital operational decisions those figures inform.

Event attendees will also learn about Raz’s own business journey, how her operations have adapted over time, and how a closer look at financial inflows and outflows can support stronger decisions around growth, staffing, leasing, and overall business resilience and sustainability.

Space is limited, and registration is required. Local small business owners can register and find more information at makeittacoma.com/events. Those with questions about the workshop, or who would like to request information in an alternate format, can contact Dierdre Patterson at dpatterson3@tacoma.gov or (253) 591-5621.
