On February 3, 2026, the City Council confirmed Interim City Manager Hyun Kim’s appointment of Patti Jackson as Tacoma’s Police Chief, effective February 9, 2026.

“Tacoma matters to me, and so does the work ahead,” said Chief Jackson. “I’m honored to accept this appointment and to continue leading alongside dedicated employees, City leadership, and community partners, with a shared focus on safety, trust, and service.”

Chief Jackson, who began serving as Tacoma’s Interim Police Chief on March 7, 2025, brings more than 35 years of law enforcement experience to the role, including extensive leadership experience with the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office. She also served as the Basic Law Enforcement Academy Corrections Commander at the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission.

“For more than a year, I have seen Chief Jackson show up consistently in our community,” said Mayor Anders Ibsen. “In addition to her ongoing focus on fully staffing and modernizing the department, Chief Jackson has helped change the culture of our department. Officers feel supported, engaged, and proud of the work they do. She has reached out earnestly to people across our community, including those who are skeptical of law enforcement, and has worked to build trust through action and presence. Her confirmation reflects the confidence I, and this community, have in her leadership as our Chief of Police.”

Throughout her career, Chief Jackson has prioritized strengthening trust between law enforcement and the community, while also gaining experience in negotiating union contracts, preparing budgets, and mentoring colleagues into leadership positions.  She has consistently demonstrated a commitment to holding those who break the law accountable while showing empathy for those experiencing homelessness, addiction challenges, and mental health troubles.

“Chief Jackson leads with a principled approach defined by empathy and a commitment to fairness, never losing sight of the need for personal and professional responsibility,” said Interim City Manager Kim. “With Chief Jackson, the Tacoma Police Department has gained a leader who works tirelessly to build bridges. Her dedication to fostering open, transparent dialogue has created a depth of connection within the Tacoma Police Department and across the community it serves.”
