The City Council has adopted Resolution 41815 officially designating Kochi, India as a Friendship City, further expanding the City’s global engagement and fostering international collaboration. Sponsored by Mayor Victoria Woodards and District 4 Council Member Sandesh Sadalge, this designation formally recognizes the growing relationship between the two diverse coastal communities and sets the stage for potential future Sister City status.
“Establishing this relationship expands Tacoma’s global engagement and creates new pathways for cultural, educational, and economic exchange,” said Mayor Woodards. “I want to thank our Tacoma-Kochi Friendship City Committee for their efforts so far, including already hosting a Festival of Light for India Day last October.”
The Festival of Light successfully engaged the public through cultural events, a fashion show, and educational workshops. A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed in November 2024 during a delegation visit to Kochi, laying a strong foundation for future partnerships.
“I am thrilled to see the City of Tacoma officially designate Kochi, India as our Friendship City,” said Council Member Sadalge. “As the first South Asian born Council Member in Tacoma, it is deeply meaningful to be here for this vote. It has been my honor to work with the Tacoma-Kochi Friendship City Committee and participate in events that showcase the arts, cultures and heritage of India. Sister City relationships are part of what makes Tacoma welcoming and inclusive, and are key to connecting Tacomans with people from around the world.”
The partnership between Tacoma and Kochi is grounded in the shared strengths and complementary priorities of both cities. Like Tacoma, Kochi is a diverse coastal city with robust port operations, a growing creative economy, and a strong commitment to sustainability and community-driven development.
Key areas identified for mutual collaboration include:
- Maritime Industries & Port Operations: Leveraging both cities’ leadership in port modernization
- Sustainability: Sharing knowledge on climate resilience, clean energy, and environmental stewardship
- Culture & Education: Creating opportunities for local schools, universities, and arts groups to engage in joint projects and partnerships
A Friendship City designation serves as a stepping stone and a period of review. The resolution requires a review of the relationship within five years to determine if it should evolve into a formal Sister City designation.
