Fire Outside City of Tacoma Facility on Martin Luther King Jr. Way Temporarily Disrupts PEG Channels

Damage from a fire that occurred in the early morning on November 9 outside a City of Tacoma facility on the 1200 Block of Martin Luther King Jr. Way has severed the fiber optic connection for a number of Public, Educational, and Government (PEG) channels including TV Tacoma, CityPost, Tacoma Public Schools, Pierce County TV, University Place TV, and Bates Technical College TV. These channels currently appear to be unavailable to subscribers on both the Comcast (Xfinity) and LightCurve (Rainier Connect) networks.

The fiber damage has also impacted the City of Tacoma’s CityNet network, an internal data network infrastructure that connects various government buildings and facilities. While the network is still running, City staff have lost diagnostic visibility from this location and are actively assessing potential service interruptions.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Updates will be provided on the City’s official social media platforms as more information becomes available.
