The Tacoma City Council voted unanimously on October 7, 2025 to sponsor Trick or Streets, hosted by Safe Streets. Trick or Streets offers neighbors the opportunity to close residential streets to vehicle traffic for free to promote a safe and fun environment for Halloween, Dia de los Muertos, and fall-themed celebrations during the weekend of October 31 – November 2, 2025.
“While Halloween is meant to be scary, it is not supposed to be dangerous for pedestrians, especially for young children. We need to come up with creative solutions for helping our community to come together and celebrate the season in a safe way,” said District 1 Council Member John Hines. “Trick or Streets gives more of us the chance to create fun and fang-tastic spaces to connect and enjoy the spooky season together without concern for traffic. Trick or Streets is about more than just candy and costumes, it’s about spending time with your neighbors and building community.”
“Whether your family is out trick-or-treating or just enjoying a beautiful fall evening with your neighbors, Trick or Streets aims to enhance pedestrian safety for our community this year,” said At-Large Council Member Kristina Walker. “The fall season is fantastic in Tacoma, and we want our residents to be able to enjoy it as safely as possible. Safe Streets has made it so easy for community members to register for Trick or Streets, and I can’t wait to hear all about the fun and creative block parties that take place.”
Safe Streets is a non-profit organization that aims to unite and inspire youth, neighbors, and businesses to build safe, healthy, and thriving communities. Safe Streets has experience successfully hosting National Night Out in Tacoma, which similarly enables neighbors to host block parties and community events focused on fostering positive community celebrations and partnerships.
“Not only is this a great idea, it’s a great idea that came directly from our neighbors who care deeply about building a stronger, safer community,” said District 2 Council Member Sarah Rumbaugh. “Trick or Streets is about creating spaces where families can enjoy Halloween without worrying about traffic or safety. It reflects the kind of local leadership we should celebrate, where residents coming forward with creative solutions that serve everyone. I’m proud to support this first step, and I hope this can grow into a broader citywide tradition in the years ahead.”
Community members citywide can register their street for closure with Safe Streets at no cost during the weekend of October 31 – November 2, 2025. More information is available through Safe Streets.
