South 21st Street between Jefferson and Pacific avenues will close for six to eight weeks starting around March 26 for more work on Phase II of the City of Tacoma’s Prairie Line Trail Project. The Phase II segment of the Prairie Line Trail is located along Hood Street, between South 21st and South 25th streets.
The project, which began in early 2024, aims to improve Tacoma’s active transportation network by connecting the waterfront to downtown through city and regional trails. Work on the project includes trail construction, sanitary sewer improvements, concrete pavement installation, pavement restoration and roadway reconstruction.
While this work is taking place, the Interstate 705/State Route 509 interchange adjacent to Pacific Avenue will remain open. Westbound traffic approaching Pacific Avenue will be detoured north or south on Pacific Avenue.
Dolly Roberson Loop Road, a private road north of South 21st Street, will remain accessible. Motorists should follow posted detour signs. Traffic will be directed north to South 15th Street or south to South 25th Street.
Project updates are available at cityoftacoma.org/capital-projects/PLT2. Portable message signs at Pacific Avenue and Jefferson Avenue will also display real-time construction updates.
