Whether you’re launching a brand-new venture or expanding your business to our city, we’re here to support your success. Explore next steps, resources, and guidance to help you get started and thrive in Tacoma’s vibrant business community.

Business License Structures

You can choose from several business structures to operate your business. Each business structure has its own advantages and disadvantages that you should consider. Consulting with an attorney, accountant, financial advisor, or other business expert can help you determine which structure is most suitable for your business.

Out of City Businesses

Businesses located outside Tacoma that engage in activities within the city must obtain a license and remit Business & Occupation (B&O) tax on their Tacoma-based activities.

Voluntary Disclosure Program

The Voluntary Disclosure Program encourages unregistered businesses to comply with City licensing and tax laws. Upon acceptance into the program, the “look-back” period is generally limited to the current year and the previous four years, with late filing penalties waived.

Zoning and Permits

Access zoning, permit, and inspection details with ease using the City of Tacoma’s Zoning Map. Not sure if your business address falls within city limits, if your zoning permits an auto body shop, or if you’re located in a historical district? Find answers to these questions and more on the City’s Zoning map.

State and Federal Licensing Information

Almost all businesses operating in the State of Washington are required to obtain licenses at both the state and local levels. Additionally, a specialty or professional license may be necessary. It’s important to note that the Washington State business license is not an all-in-one or blanket license; it does not replace the need for a local license.

Below is a list of agencies for you to contact to learn about licensing requirements before starting your business.
