The City of Tacoma provides curbside garbage, recycling, and food and yard waste collection for residential, multifamily, and commercial business customers. Self-haul options to the Tacoma Recovery & Transfer Center is also available for a fee.

The Tacoma Recovery & Transfer Center also offers hazardous waste disposal, free yard waste recycling, and expanded recycling services at the Tacoma Recycle Center.

Residential Garbage Service

Tacoma residents are required to use the City’s Solid Waste services. Fees are based on the amount of garbage you dispose of and the size of your garbage container. Residents can also self-haul garbage, recycling, yard waste, and hazardous materials to the Tacoma Recovery & Transfer Center.

Non-Acceptable Curbside Garbage Items

  • Asbestos, concrete, rocks, or bricks.
  • Hazardous materials or loose hypodermic needles.
  • Large items like furniture, lumber, or appliances.
  • Liquids, medical waste, or tires.
  • Used motor oil.

Commercial Garbage Service

Commercial Services

Businesses, including multifamily residences, must use Tacoma’s garbage service. Businesses can also sign up for the City’s recycling service. While recycling is not mandatory, it is highly recommended.

How to Get Started

  1. Set Up Service: Call Solid Waste Management at (253) 502-2100 to schedule a free, on-site consultation or view our rates and fees.
  2. Determine the type of service needed.
  3. Choose container size and storage options.
  4. Appoint a Coordinator: Assign someone to educate employees and multifamily tenants.

Self-Haul Garbage Service

Self-Haul Services at Tacoma Recovery & Transfer Center

Tacoma residents can self-haul garbage to the Tacoma Recovery & Transfer Center, located at 3510 S. Mullen Street, for a fee. When visiting, customers should follow these guidelines:

  • Secure Your Load: Uncovered or unsecured loads are illegal and may incur fees.
  • Proof of Residency: To receive residential rates, bring:
    • A current WA state driver’s license or ID showing a Tacoma address.
    • Or a picture ID along with a current City utility bill.
  • Contain Dusty Materials: Bag or wet items like drywall, insulation, or sawdust to reduce dust. Improperly contained loads may be rejected or incur fees.
  • Sort Your Load: Separate recyclables, household hazardous waste, and reusable items for designated unloading areas.

Safety and Conduct Rules

  • Follow the Public Rules of Conduct
  • Observe the speed limit.
  • No smoking, scavenging, or hazardous materials.
  • Keep children and pets inside vehicles.
  • Follow employee instructions and posted signs.
  • Wear closed-toe shoes.
  • Be mindful of pedestrians.
  • Violators may be subject to the City’s illegal dumping law.
