Commercial vehicles play a vital role in our City’s transportation system, and they must comply with federal, state, and local laws for the safe operation and transportation of hazardous materials.

The City understands the vital role that commercial vehicles play in our community. The Commercial Vehicle Enforcement program ensures safety by enforcing laws related to safety inspections, size, weight, and load restrictions. Our team conducts routine roadside and terminal safety inspections and portable weighing operations to protect Tacoma’s infrastructure and promote the safe operation of commercial vehicles.

Motor Carrier Safety Unit

The Motor Carrier Safety Unit promotes commercial vehicle safety throughout the city. Its officers, certified by the U.S. Department of Transportation to conduct Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) inspections, are responsible for educating and enforcing safety regulations and inspection procedures. This unit also collaborates with other commercial vehicle enforcement officers across Washington, further strengthening the City’s commitment to transportation safety.

Important Information About Oversized Vehicles

Due to ongoing construction in the city, including the Port of Tacoma, any oversized load requiring escort vehicles must contact the Road Use Compliance or the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit at least seven (7) days before the move date. Adhering to this requirement is crucial, as failure to do so may result in refused entry. Please visit our Oversize Load Information and Permits web page for more information. We appreciate your cooperation in maintaining safety and efficiency in our City’s transportation system.
