This is the second part of a three-phase project improving East 64th Street between Portland Avenue and Tacoma city limits. Phase 2 began construction in July 2024 and was completed in September 2025. It spanned the segment of East 64th Street between McKinley Avenue and Pacific Avenue.

Improvements on East 64th Street include:

  • Adding bike lanes
  • Replacing sidewalks and curb ramps with ramps meeting ADA standards
  • Upgrading the stormwater and illumination system
  • Landscaping and art

Phase 1 (from McKinley Avenue to Pacific Avenue) was completed in 2023. Phase 3 (from Portland Avenue to the City limits) is planned for future years. View the Phase 3 web page for progress updates.

Project Milestones and Meeting Documents

Project phasing and design options with potential improvements to East 64th Street were presented. The intent of the Open House was to collect stakeholder input and feedback on the design options. We had excellent attendance and collected some very helpful comments.

The selected option is based on the public survey and inputs from the Bicycle and Pedestrian Technical Advisory Group (BPTAG).

City Staff provided design and schedule updates. Relocation of power poles prior to the road construction project was also presented.

City staff provided an update on the design and the anticipated construction timelines for the relocation of the existing power poles and construction of the road, pedestrian, and bicycle facilities. A video recording and documents from the meeting are provided below.

The Tacoma Area Commission on Disabilities and the City of Tacoma Public Works Department held a ribbon cutting ceremony for Phase 1 on May 25, 2023.

A ribbon cutting ceremony for Phase II was conducted October 20, 2025.

Phase 3 of the 64th Street project is planned to complete the segment between Portland Avenue and the City limits.  Visit the Phase 3 page for more information.
