The City’s Events and Recognitions Committee serves as an advisory and action committee on City-hosted events, special events funding, and recognition programs. Members are responsible for planning, reviewing, and evaluating events to receive grant funding and services, as well as engaging the community in its planning efforts for the City of Destiny Awards and the annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration.

Establishment

The City Council created the City’s Events and Recognitions Committee for the purpose of planning and fundraising for City-hosted observation and recognition events in May 2013, through Resolution No. 38670.

Each year, the City's Events & Recognitions Committee welcomes members of the community to honor the legacy of Dr. King’s teaching and action in community service.

The annual City of Destiny Awards recognizes recipients for a number of awards, including Adult and Youth Leadership, Lifetime Service, Youth and Group Service categories, Environmental Sustainability, Disability Advocates (Professional and Volunteer), Economic Development, and Equity & Empowerment.

Special Events Funding

The Special Events Funding program is intended to provide funds to qualified event producers. The intent is to foster high-quality, open-to-the-public events across all of Tacoma; it will also seek to help strengthen the capacity of producing organizations to find other sustainable funding sources for the future of their event(s).

The members are committed to recognizing notable individuals and organizations in the community, and providing support to City-funded (and other notable) events.
