South 21st Street – between Jefferson and Pacific avenues – is expected to reopen on the evening of July 3, following the completion of Prairie Line Trail Phase II enhancements. The project, initiated in early 2024, is enhancing Tacoma’s active transportation network by connecting the waterfront to downtown through city and regional trails.
Phase II enhancements along Hood Street – between South 21st and South 25th streets – include trail construction, sanitary sewer upgrades, concrete pavement installation, pavement restoration, and roadway reconstruction. Once work is completed along Hood Street – currently estimated for mid-July – the completed Phase I trail at the University of Washington Tacoma campus will connect to the existing Water Ditch Trail.
