The City of Tacoma today announced several leadership transitions within key departments. These adjustments come as the City, like many municipalities nationwide, navigates a challenging budget environment.
“Change is inevitable, and in municipal government, leadership naturally evolves,” said Mayor Victoria Woodards. “While some key roles are shifting, our commitment to delivering essential services remains the same — from maintaining infrastructure and protecting the environment, to supporting safe, thriving neighborhoods. Serving our community is at the heart of everything we do and that is one thing that will never change.”
The following leadership updates have been announced:
- Ramiro Chavez, previously the Public Works Director, will transition to lead the Environmental Services Department as its new Director, dependent upon Council confirmation. His proven leadership will be invaluable in advancing the City’s environmental services initiatives.
- Assistant Public Works Director Jeff Jenkins will step into the role of Public Works Director, dependent upon Council confirmation. He brings a wealth of experience to this position, ensuring continuity in the vital services provided by the Public Works Department.
- Geoff Smyth, who has admirably served as interim Environmental Services Director, will continue to lend his expertise as Deputy Director. The City extends its gratitude for his continued leadership and service.
- Katie Johnston, who served as interim Neighborhood & Community Services Director, departed the City last week to pursue an opportunity with Pierce County. The City thanks her for her contributions during her tenure.
- Vicky McLaurin brings her years of valuable Neighborhood & Community Services Division Manager experience to the role of interim Neighborhood & Community Services Director.
- To ensure the Human Resources Department continues to operate effectively, Kari Louie has graciously accepted interim Human Resources Director responsibilities.
- Finally, Interim Deputy City Manager Sonja Hallum has agreed to support our interim Directors in Neighborhood & Community Services and Human Resources, as they lead these important City departments.
“We understand that these changes represent a number of transitions in a short period,” said City Manager Elizabeth Pauli. “However, it’s important for our community to know that our dedicated staff across all City departments are committed to their work, and the strategic priorities of the City Council continue to guide our efforts. We are incredibly fortunate to have a deep bench of talented professionals ready to step into these roles and keep the City moving forward.”
The City is committed to keeping the community informed and will provide further updates as they become available.
