The Environmental Services (ES) Strategic Plan serves as our agenda and helps guide decisions for our department through 2025. We believe that every employee, working together each day on the common direction established in this plan, can help further our efforts to support healthy neighborhoods and a thriving Puget Sound in our great Tacoma community.

Our Vision

Our vision is simple: healthier neighborhoods and a thriving Puget Sound make for a stronger, better Tacoma. The Environmental Services Strategic Plan for 2018-2025 outlines the key areas of focus and action steps to achieve this vision, serving as a roadmap for the department’s decisions and actions through 2025.

Framework

The ES Strategic Plan is built on a clear framework: the why, how, and what of Environmental Services’ role in Tacoma’s future. Here’s a brief breakdown:

  • Why: Our mission and purpose. To create healthy neighborhoods and a thriving Puget Sound for a better Tacoma for all.
  • How: The strategies that guide our actions.
    • Customers: Partner with our community on customer-valued services to meet the diverse needs of our neighborhoods.
    • Employees: Foster a safe culture built on trust, conversation and equity.
    • Operations: Operate using best practices and innovation to meet changing environmental and community needs.
  • What: Specific initiatives and goals we aim to accomplish by 2025 (see below).

Key Initiatives

Nine initiatives, one for each “what,” were prioritized for the initial implementation starting in 2018 and were assigned specific leaders to ensure their success. Additional initiatives will be added as these are completed. The first nine initiatives are:

  1. Environmental Baseline: Conduct neighborhood assessments to establish environmental baseline conditions and identify priority locations for “green” projects.
  2. Equitable Service: Improve the use of data to provide equitable service delivery
  3. Marketing Campaign: Promote services and programs through an Environmental Services marketing campaign.
  4. Team of Teams: Develop the framework to establish cross-divisional teams, to achieve department-wide goals.
  5. Lifelong Learning: Foster a culture of lifelong learning and identify any training or continuing education needs.
  6. Empower: Empower people closest to the work to make informed decisions.
  7. Business Processes: Identify opportunities for improvements in business processes.
  8. Budget Transparency & Education: Use transparent budgeting and operations dashboards to share information and provide relevant training.
  9. Safety: Elevate safety through targeted training on identified improvement areas.
