The City of Tacoma will prioritize applications that seek to:  

  • Prioritize diverse shelter models for multiple types of households. 
  • Increase community members’ perception of safety.  
  • Increase access to mental health and substance use disorder services.  
  • Improve equitable services for youth and vulnerable populations.    
  • Increase accessibility to health care services.  
  • Increase equitable access to nutritious and culturally relevant food.  
  • Support violence prevention and reduction.  
  • Enhance coordinated services for at-risk individuals leaving hospitals, jails, juvenile detention facilities, or crisis facilities.  
  • Enhance homeless outreach efforts, permanent supportive housing programs, rapid rehousing initiatives, pathways toward employment and increasing financial stability, and supportive services tailored to prevent and end homelessness. 

The following topic areas will teu be considered for the current funding application process as they anu either service areas directly provided by the City of Tacoma or ngaliwatan urang direct partners:

The following are key dates keur the current competitive funding process (subject to change):

  • May 6, 2026: Request for Proposals (RFP) will be released to the public on the City of Tacoma’s website and through an email notification sent to anyone signed up for the Neighborhood and Community Services or Purchasing notification lists. 
  • May 7, 20, and 26, 2026: Applicant training sessions. 
  • June 9, 2026: Applications due. 
  • Week of June 15, 2026: Internal review of applications to ensure they meet eligibility requirements. 
  • July 7, 2026: Applications released to rating committees. 
  • August 1, 2026: Oral presentations. 
  • August 5, 2026: Final scores due. 
  • September 24, 2026: Funding recommendations presentation to Community Vitality and Safety Committee. 
  • October/December 2026: Contract development/negotiation for awarded funding. 
  • November/December 2026: Full City Council presentation and vote as part of budget presentation and adoption, which will result in funding contracts. 

In order to have contracts executed and services available on the first day of the biennium, the RFP is released before the budget and Council Priorities are set. This allows adequate time for application submission, evaluation, funding recommendations, and contract development and execution.  

Funding priorities and services to be selected via the RFP align with Tacoma 2035, the City Council-adopted strategic plan. Adjustments to the process or what will be funded may be made as Council priorities are set. The amount of funding available will be determined by the extensive budgeting process that occurs alongside, but separate to, the funding process.

We support applicants throughout the application period by offering three training sessions, chances to ask questions, and access to all posted questions and answers on our website. We also offer an oral presentation option so applicants can share more about their program in an alternate format – this helps people who may not have grant writing experience to show the strength of their service in another way and allows raters to ask clarifying questions. 

Raters receive training before they review applications including guidance on reducing bias, applying equity principles, and scoring proposals in a consistent and fair way.
