SUMMARY:City Council Public Hearing: South Tacoma Groundwater Protection District Code Update
DESCRIPTION:On August 12\, 2025\, the City Council will conduct a public hearing on proposed amendments to the South Tacoma Groundwater Protection District (STGPD) code and Tacoma Municipal Code (TMC) Title 13. The hearing will be held during the Council meeting and will begin upon completion of the regular agenda items\, no earlier than 5:15 p.m. Council meetings are conducted in a hybrid format with in-person and virtual options to attend.\nThe STGPD is a zoning overlay created to protect the South Tacoma aquifer\, a vital source of drinking water. The district regulates high-impact uses\, hazardous materials\, and stormwater infiltration within its boundaries. The City is currently reviewing proposed updates to the code governing this district\, as required by the State Growth Management Act and guided by Council direction. The updates aim to strengthen protections for the South Tacoma aquifer. The Council is now seeking public input on the proposed amendments recommended by the Planning Commission.\nDetails on how to participate in the hearing and submit comments on the proposal are available at tacoma.gov/stgpd. As a result\, any hearings conducted by the Hearing Examiner’s Office that include public testimony (e.g.\, rezones\, street vacations\, local improvement districts) as part of the agenda will\, of necessity\, have a public attendance component\, and unless otherwise noticed\, attendance will be possible in the City Council Chambers located at the Tacoma Municipal Building at 747 Market Street. \nIn order to expand opportunity for attendance\, these in-person hearings will still have a remote attendance option (via the internet or telephone) over the Zoom platform.
